Christmas in New Zealand is far less commercial than it is in the UK, street aren't decorated and most house only have a tree, no lights or wreaths. It felt very strange being in Nelson and seeing the Christmas shoppers hurrying around; I felt like I had taken a step out of the whole proceeding and was just an observer.

So it was fun to get back to Kinloch and be enveloped in the Christmas season. The lodge was fully booked, the decorations were up and the Christmas tapes were playing! Christmas Eve brought all of the guests, including my Peej, second master from Bryanston and the godfather of a school friend of mine .... small world, hey! We woke on Christmas Day to the most glorious weather and managed a couple of hours outside the restaurant ensconced on the sofa before we served a 7 course lunch to 30 guests!!! After cleaning up in record time it was time for our Christmas dinner, a great outside feast which preceded the statutory bonfire. Even with the stocking that Mum and Dad sent me it felt much more like a summer party than Christmas!

Between Christmas and New Year the rain returned with a vengeance and had some pretty severe flooding before the clouds kindly parted and the sun came out again just in time New Year's Eve. Our evening began with a staff supper and once the dinner guests had been cleared out of the restaurant we got down to the serious business of drinking and dancing! Simon had got a great bonfire going and suitably inebriated he and John went off to the wharf and set off all of fireworks at once at midnight. Needless to say the party carried on for several hours afterwards and 1 January 2005 saw us all starting slowly and feeling a little fragile!
