Where I stayed
Sebastian takes us through Paraty, pointing out a few good restaurants and a couple of good places to buy cachaca, the sugar cane spirit used to make Caipirinha’s, on the way. The restaurant we end up at is a pizza place situated on the main square, it’s a pleasant location and we sit outside taking in the surroundings and the late evening air.
There is another gap group in town as well, and 2 of them plus their tour guide Jose meet up with us in the restaurant, they are on the comfort level of trip, as opposed to our basic trip, which means more flights than buses and slightly nicer hotels
Sebastian has both encouraged us to try the local tipple, the Caipirinha’s, and also warned us of the strength of these drinks, particularly at the bar/ restaurant we are at now; 2 really should be our limit!..... So 1 very nice pizza, 2 not so nice shots (see photos) and 4 (yes four) Caipirinha’s later my world is a little hazy.
I am not the only one however, well maybe I am the only one to have 4, but everyone’s world is definitely also a little hazy tonight…. There is however time for another little rendition of Hola Senor Lloyd!!!; this has been taken on as one of the tour catchphrases, started by me apparently on the long night bus from Iguaçu, combining the little Spanish I know with a natural ability to be camp after a glass of wine or two…….. I attach the video clip for your amusement/ despair/ confusion * delete as appropriate
After dinner and drinks we make it all the way to another bar next door with some kind of dancefloor and some tunes, thankfully I do not take any further photos of the night but the following morning yields several amusing tales shared over the breakfast table;
Jan has informed the brits that we are referred to as Island monkeys in Germany (can’t remember the German for that), … it’s a good natured insult and one both Huw and I both find quite amusing and actually agree with – can’t beat the British island mentality, dipping our toe, but nothing more into the pool that is Europe
Pascal headed back to the hotel a little earlier than some last night and only when he got there did he realise that Jan had the room key, he couldn’t remember how to get back to the bar we were in so had to wake up the hotel owner, a lovely lady called Raquel…. I would have paid good money to witness that conversation as the rather drunk and wonderfully French (I know he is Swiss but he is very French Swiss) Pascal explained the situation and obtained a room key.
Huw though has my favourite quote of the night with "I must have been drunk; I was ordering whisky, …I don’t even like whisky!"
