The Mirabellgarten (gardens) was the perfect activity for a clear cool morning before sitting in a taxi van for 3 hours. These gardens are the grounds to the palace built for the mistress of an early royal (who had 17 children to him!!!! So deserves a good place and garden for all the kids). Neatly laid out, long paths, fountains, sculptures etc. The best fun was the dwarf type character statues which couldn't help but bring a smile to your face.
A Uni student from Cesky Krumlov was the van driver, and we shared stories and information about our respective countries, cultures and politics. Even he knew about and had formed an opinion about Julia Gillard.

Cesky on first view lived up to all expectations. From the moment of the drive into the old town- tho couldn't drive far and then bumping along cobblestones with our cases, down windy, step lane ways-we were transported back in time to the 16th C. The town had been in disrepair post WW2 and in the 1960's it was declared an historic reserve. not much happened tho until the 1980's. 1992it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site. Seeing old photos it had become quite a mess even with pollution in the Vltava river which encircles the town. Just enough time in the late afternoon to explore the surrounds and see all the Saturday tourists. CK is 2nd only to Prague as the most visited place in the Cezh Republic.

As it was my birthday, I was choosing dinner. With little time before our 7.30 tour and a surfeit of meat dishes recently I opted for vegetarian. Not the best meal I have had unfortunately, but Michael is still promising a real dinner out. We joined a night guided walk around the town and cast,e grounds, giving us an insight into the long history of this town. The town and castle were stunning in the night illumination.

Our little Pension Nostalgie is very comfortable and friendly hosts. Right in the village and we could roll down the lane to home. You could miss the front door tho' as it is only a door on a small wall, and the rest of the house going around behind.
