When we travel we keep a handwritten diary, and then type it up when we get back, adding some research information and excerpts from emails sent. We also keep details of all our expenses for each country, which we show at the end, with a "per day" expenditure for each country. As you can imagine, this is a lot of work after a 9 or 10 month trip. We've decided it would be much better to be able to type up the diary as we go along (there is usually plenty of time - in those cheap rooms with no TV, and bad reading lights, not to mention the long waits for public transport!).
We definitely don't want to carry a laptop computer with us (too heavy, but also too obvious when you're backpacking and staying in cheap places) so decided to experiment with a palm pilot. Bought a second-hand M105 and portable keyboard, which we took on a recent 6-week trip to Fiji. We thought it was fantastic, just what we wanted, until we had to change the batteries after a couple of weeks, and lost ALL of our diary, as well as all the other information stored on it. Back to the drawing board!
I had two unsuccessful attempts to download this diary, typed on our new collapisble keyboard, from my palmpilot via the expansion card. After another attempt without success, I found I needed a program to change info from docs to go to microsoft word. Luckily, while trying to work out how to do this, I found out that a new Palm program was coming out in a week (version 6.004), which would actually offer native file support (I think this means prepare them) in Microsoft word and excel. Hopefully this means I`ll download this document at an internet cafe with no problem! - just in time, as we leave in 8 days!
Well, after a lot of fiddling, and a few false starts, I've downloaded this. One more job done!!! Now back to finishing the new kitchen, and starting to pack!
