Flag of Czech Republic  , South Moravian Region,

When I look back at the last 48 hours, I'm amazed at the variety of activities.  On Friday first thing we drove about 45 minutes outside of Brno to the "woods".  Hiked in about 2 miles to a girl scout camp and had a lecture about scouting in the Czech Republic.  The girls at the camp were between 11 and 15.  There system of scouting is much like that I experienced with the exception that parents are not usually the adult leaders, but older girls who have gone through scouting.  Many are university students. There system places much more responsibillity on the scouts.  They prepared a camp lunch of chicken soup followed by goulash (basically sausage soup) and bread.  The girls sang some songs for use and we headed out to our next stop -- the caves.

Went on a tour of the Moravian Karst which is a series of limestone caves.  First we walked through the caves and saw stalagtites and stalagmites.  When we got further into the cave we took a boat through the river under the cave system with some really deep pools.  We got off the boat and hiked back up the trail.  It was really fun to get out and see some nature and some of the beautiful Moravian landscapes.  The Moravian region is postcard beautiful.

Stopped at a restaurant overlooking the city of Brno for our farewell dinner to Brno with the facilitators of this portion of our study program.  It was hard to say goodbye to the "2 Martins" they had been so helpful and fun. At dinner we mentioned that we would like to see some typical Czech homes and right away, they offered to take us to their homes. These young men (both are professors at the university) showed us their homes.  One Martin lived in a very small two bedroom condo (very typical for those highrise buildings) it was in a modern style..  The other Martin lived in an old 1800's blue collar worker neighborhood -- the kind you wouldn't walk in at night -- but is really safe still.  His flat was two rooms -- a kitchen and a livingroom/bedroom.  It is interesting to not that both of these Martins have no children -- one is married to a lawyer and the other to a radiologist.

After leaving Brno on Saturday morning we had a chartered bus to Prague about 2 1/2 hours away.  Got to Prague and guess what we did -- Yep, you're right -- we had a 2 1/2 hour lunch.  Had a couple hours to explore Prague before the three-hour welcome dinner.

Prague has really changed in 10 years.  It is much more modern looking and clean and shiny.  It is full of international stor.es and big name designer shops--very gaudy-5th Avenue like.  It is full of tourists.  Didn't have much timeto walk around, but we will have a walking tour today.  When i get home, I plan to pull out my pictures from 10 years ago to compare.
