We started the day by visiting the 'ghost' village of Kayakoy, a Greek town that was abandoned in 1923 when the government of Turkey and Greece decided to do a 'population exchange'. This forced thousands of Greeks out of Turkey and likewise forced Turks out of Greece. As a result this town became a ghost town and now is a museum. After the visit, we had tea, Turkish coffee, soft drinks and so on outside the village.
On to the river town of Dalyan, to take a river excursion. We had a close up look at the Carian rock tombs and the ancient city of Kaunos. Cruising down the river we passed rock faces covered with these tombs
We were off to the ocean front for some swimming but the wind and waves made that impossible however we had quite a surprising treat in store. This beach is an important nesting ground for Leatherback and Green Turtles and this is egg laying time. From the boat we managed to see several of these huge creatures, what a delight! After deciding that the weather was not conducive to swimming or even relaxing, we headed to the boat and travelled to the mud baths and hot springs.
Several of the group were keen to jump into the mud and try its reported healing properties. Being your skeptic correspondent, I chose to observe and record the antics of the participants, including Jacqui. From the depths of the mud, the mud people showered off and plunged or crawled into the hot spring pool. Not all claimed it was an enjoyable experience, I believe JB found it 'interesting'.
After another shower to wash off the sulphur smell, we retreated to the bus heading back to Fethiye for dinner and sleep. Tonight we went to a fish market where the non-veggies amongst us (all but JB and I) picked a fish from a fish monger, paid for the beast, they delivered the fish to our restaurant, one of many in the marketplace, who then prepared fish, added salad and bread, charging 5 lira for the effort and, of course, sold drinks to wash the stuff down.
Finally back to our wonderful hotel to fall asleep and have the dreams of the worn out tourist.
