Today is dedicated to a full day on the water after we drive to the boat, about an hour and a half from town in Ucagiz. Our driver is quite skilled manoeuvring the bus down steep and narrow roads with no guard rails all the while missing the land turtles that are everywhere in the countryside. On the way back I counted 8 or so turtles on the road making their way to the rest of their day. The turtles are a fair size ranging up to 12 inches or more in length.
We arrived at the dock to find our boat. The father was the captain, his wife the chief cook and their little girl a general helper. He employed a village lad to help out on the boat. They had a
photographer on board to take your picture for a souvenir. As he takes the pictures, the captain casts off and away we went. When the photographer finished, another small boat came roaring along side and the photographer jumped from our boat to his.
First stop was an ancient ship repair docking area which is now a favourite for swimming. After a hour or so for those who were willing to jump in we motored down a bit further where more swimming was on offer. A delicious lunch was prepared by the captain's wife.
Off again to sail over the underwater city. You can not stop a boat over the city nor is diving permitted. However, most of the sites to be seen have ruins on the shore. It is an old Greek settlement that earthquakes dropped into the sea causing the remaining residents to move across the strait to build their homes and fortifications on more sturdy ground – they hoped. Of course that is where we headed next. Most of the group, sans yours truly, decided to trek up this awful hill, in the heat, to explore the castle
After all of that we returned to the boat for our journey back to the hotel.
Back in Kas, I decided to skip the community meal to try to get my health back to working order at least as good as it gets. I bought some of the wonderful small bananas that grow here and had a short swim, to cool down, ate 3 bananas, had a mineral water and took it easy.
