Finally the vacation begins,  it is hot and beautiful in Greece!

July 27, 2008

A very early start to the morning.  I had to be at the ferry port at 6:30 am.  Luckily the hostel was close to the metro station and I only had to catch one line to the port.  There are quite a few people on the tour; about 40 with one guide.  The ferry was huge and we had to leave our bags on the bottom level and head up to the top floor.  It was a little unnerving but I had all of my important things with me so if anything happen to my bag it was just clothes.

The ferry ride was about 5 hours but it went by pretty quickly as we all met each other.  There is a couple on the tour from Edmonton, which is nice because no one seems to know where Alberta is nevermind Edmonton!  There are also a couple of girls from Quebec... the most Canadians so far.  The majority again are Australian.  It's hard to believe that there is anyone left in Australia.

We arrived on Mykonos Island around 2 and were taken in vans from the ferry to the hostel.  The roads are very narrow and there aren't really any rules, stop signs, lights etc to control traffic.  It's pretty much a free for all on roads that can barely fit two vehicles nevermind a huge tour bus!  I met a girl from England on the boat and we spent the afternoon on the beach trying not to get burnt.  It was already 25 at 6:30 in the morning so by the time we got there it was about 40.  Barb would love this!!

In the evening the guide took us on a quick walking tour of the town and we all had dinner together.  Authentic Greek food in Greece... very tasty... very greasy!  The island is what you would imaging Greece to be with all white houses (actually the law to paint your house white) with blue window shutters and doors.  The hostel is right on the beach and I have never swam in such salty water.

July 28, 2008:

Apparently Mykonos is a party island and has a very high gay population as we discovered tonight!  Today was spent on the beach and swimming in the ocean.  My very expensive shack turned ended up being cooler during the evening but backed right onto the road so all night there were scooters and cars honking and driving by.  The nights don't usually begin until 10 pm on this island and end around 7 am (not for me though so my ipod and ear plugs have come in handy).  After a lazy day on the beach we had dinner at the cafe at the hostel and around 8 the interesting night life here began.  I won't go into great detail but there were men in pink thongs and high heals...  On to Paros tomorrow!
