All good things come to an end and the weekend was over. We needed to get back to the boat to ready her for the next set of visitors, Paul Rodhouse, who comes sailing with us whenever he can and who has been mentioned in previous blogs and also mentioned last year was his son Tom, who was coming along as well. It was an earlyish start, we were in the car and on our way by 09:00. Once again, the selfless Wexlers were happy to drive us the 30 miles from their village of Ingham back to the boat, thank you both again.
We got our chores done and were joined by Paul, Tom and Laura, who had driven them down from Cambridge and who definitely is not a sailor! Our plan was to use the full 6 hours of favourable tide to take us down to Orford Ness and thence work our way south until the Thursday, when we would end up in Tollesbury. We had a bit of time until the tide turned, so we had lunch and saw Laura off and were on our way by 14:30. Now that we were going South, of course the North Easterly wind had been replaced by a SSW wind, blowing at F5. Wind against tide made it bumpy but we could still clip along at over 7 knots over the ground but sadly, not directly South, which is what we wanted. Even more sadly, poor Tom started feeling unwell and in truth, Paul was not a good colour either. We decided therefore, after about 10 miles, to call it quits and make for Southwold again. This plan however, was killed at birth when the harbour master told me that they were full. Our only other option then was to turn around and head back to Lowestoft, which is what we did, getting back to our old berth by 18:30.
