On the way to San Rafael, home of some of the oldest vineyards in the country, we pass through Tunuyán and Tupungato again, and the small towns of La Consulta, San Carlos, and Pareditas. There are many dams and lakes in this area, providing plenty of irrigation water which flows through all the towns and cities through open ditches regularly interrupted with gates which are open and shut according to each landowner's scheduled turn for water usage. This system has been in place for something like 400 years, it’s amazing. We visited the Los Reyunos dam, and the towns of Villa Atuel and General Alvear, also Real del Padre and Monte Coman. Especially like Cuadro Benegas area, lots of smaller farms. We wanted to take famous route 40 south into Neuquén province but have been talked out of it by several "experts", gas station attendants and tourist information officers, etc. and the only other option seems to be drive southeast into the province of La Pampa, then head southwest into Neuquén province and again head west towards the Andes. Very aggravating.
