An expensive mistake
Entry 8 of 17 | show all | print this entry |
This will also be known as the day that "Frank & Denise almost killed Nathan"
The next morning, all 3 of us were not feeling so hot. I guess that's what 4 large beers and countless vodka & sprites will do to you. We packed up and headed off to the airport. We had a 2PM flight to Kuala Lumpur. We took the Maglev, the fast train to Pudong International Airport. When we arrived, we looked at the board that listed all the airlines in Terminal 1 & 2. It was like the train station all over again. "Where is Z19?" "Where is Air Asia?" We stared at this board and couldn't find Air Asia. Thinking I must have skimmed over it, I looked again. Nope, it wasn't listed. Nathan thought that since it was a small airline so that's why it wasn't listed on the board. We asked some lady near by what terminal for Air Asia but she was about as useless as they come. We looked again and again. By this time, it was 12:15PM. Frank got his itinerary out of the bag. We were at the wrong airport. Fantastic.
The other airport, Hongqiao Airport, was not close at all. There is no way we would have made it before our flight and it was the last flight to KL that day. I wanted to kill Nathan at this point. Frank and I kept exchanging glances and could read each others mind: kill Nathan. When are you in charge of planning a city, our rules are that you plan everything: the hostel, what to do, night life and transportation. The other 2 "sit back & relax" as I was told at one point, so this mistake really fell on his shoulders. We had to get to Kuala Lumpur so we headed to the international terminal to see if we could get tickets and how much it would cost. We walked up to a few counters and they didn't have any flights to KL. Finally, someone pointed us in the right direction. Malaysian Airlines had a flight that evening at 6PM with open seats. She just said "400", so I thought it was 400 yuan (roughly 75 bucks). But I was wrong, 400 dollars. Great. I wanted to kill him even more at this point. We really had no choice so we had to do it. We could have caught a flight the next day on our original airline (provided we were able to transfer our tickets and that they had open seats, both of which we were not sure about), but we would miss a whole day in KL and we had things planned. Once we got the tickets, we realized that she didn't convert it right and it was $500. Even better.
(Expensive) Lesson Learned: check all airport & train locations.
Where I stayed:
Pudong International Airport

I bet you're still having fun though! You could be freezing your ass off here in Chicago like me. Don't worry, the cold weather will be here when you land.
Scarlet and I decorated the Christmas tree today -- I've become senile and caught myself calling her the name of my former former roommate's cat (the one that jumped out the car window). Ironically, that cat was named Cujo.
