On our first full day, we drove along and above the coast to the medieval hill town of Eze, which was very beautiful and quaint, but odd because no one lives there. The tiny winding streets are full of shops and galleries. There is an interesting garden of cacti and the ruins of a fort at the top of the hill.
We went to Ventimiglia, across the border in Italy, looking for a botanical garden but never found it. We stopped for a short walk and coffee by the shore. We noticed how much more shabby and ordinary this town was compared to the French towns, but it had a sense of normal life.
We next wandered around Menton, especially the old town, and had a glass of wine at a brasserie. We visited a casino to kill time waiting for the restaurants to open for dinner at 7. Not a memorable dinner.
Today was a driving day where we fought with tour buses on the narrow streets (coming within an inch of being hit at one point) and dealing with the toll roads not taking our credit cards and looking for change.
