With 8 hours to spend in Madrid between flights we found a Segway tour company (www.madsegs.com) and had a terrific 3-hour tour. The Segways were new to us and we found them easy to navigate around people and streets, hillsides and curbs (I want one). With this form of transportation and the excellent local knowledge of Anthony, our guide (world Segway champion for the last two years originally from Scotland and speaking excellent English), we were able to get a brief overview of Madrid before going back to the airport and continuing our travels to Nice, France. While in Madrid, we saw adults and children dressed in brightly colored period costumes for a local (we think) celebration. We walked through a large square that reminded us of St. Mark's Square in Venice which was crowded with restaurants, shops and locals having a good visit with each other...kids and adults. Anthony also led us to several old churches that we entered (leaving the Segways outside) to view the stained glass windows and architecture. Madrid also has their own version of Boston's "big dig" but much less expensive. We were very comfortable in Madrid and easily took the subway back to the airport.
