Arad: On the road today at 6.30am so we could max our time in Arad, just 100ks away. The very small part of Romania we have seen could have been Serbia . Soon after crossing the border we stopped at Nadlac, population 8,154, to get some money changed and the first coffee for the day. The bank staff was most helpful, including the guard with the obligatory sidearm. Our coffee stop was shared with a few locals, some drinking coffee, the others, beer. An early start, but not much else to do in town.

As we travel from one country to another some subtle differences emerge. At this point of time we have become aware that a lot of the houses don't have downpipes as such from the spouting. The down? pipes come off the house at an angle, to allow for a fall and drain into the gutter beside the road, if you see what I mean?

We were amazed at the numbers of Taxis stacked into the Taxi ranks, waiting for fares. must have been 40 pus. And there were more than one rank like that.

We have seen some magnificent buildings in Arad, the best we have seen so far. (Thank god for digital cameras..) Romania is struggling economically, but they seem to be trying. A set of circumstances saw us being guided for 1hr 20 (Den timed it!) around a quite amazing museum by a really nice guy. 10 mins would have been enough for us, but what could we do?  In spite of that it really was very interesting.   At the end we asked how much. Nothing. Offered USD8 and he would not accept. Pretty humbling. In fact people all seem friendly and many speak English which is a real bonus to us.

We fluked our accommodation, again. The Continental, in the middle of Arad, for EUD50. About NZD120. It's luxury and would be at least NZD300 in NZ. We had lunch at the restaurant, top quality and cheap. It is accepted as a great destination and sooooo much cheaper than other parts of Europe. We wish our itinerary allowed more time in Romania.

It will be back thru the hour long wait at the Hungarian border tomorrow as we head to Budapest and now, on our way back to Paris .

Traveled 3,266ks so far. It averages as 204ks for the 16 days that we have toured. We have not toured on 4 days. Still got 8 spare days.

The hot weather is certainly following us. In the mid 30s generally. Sometimes hitting low 40s. Nights are wonderful. Can it last???

116ks today. 3,266ks total.
