I walk as much as I can when in Methoni, taking advantage of the opporunity to be by the sea, regardless of the weather.

Every year the winter storms batter the coastline, wreaking damage along the promenade.  Most year's - come spring, efforts are made to repair the damage, but now there are no repairs.  is it because of the economy or because the repairs never last so now the council has decided to give in to the forces of nature?

Of course the erosian is not new.  look out to see from one of the hills and you will see remnants of past shorelines under the clear water.

Without even a low concrete wall, to help prevent flooding, the beach has now reached the road and the photos show how the pebbles have been thrown across the road.  Residents told of the sea coming right up to their garden walls and it must have been frightening.  More of the large tamarisk trees have been uprooted.  They can withstand wind and salty air, but split easily as they grow old.

It is a sad sight, sadder than usual, and I wonder at the newly built apartments and bungalows further inland but not much higher than the sea level.
