Where I stayed

It turns out that not having assigned seats isn't such a bad thing.....the only seats still available were in the "economy plus" section and so we enjoyed a little extra leg room for our final flight.

Never can a landing in Edmonton have been quite so anticipated and enjoyable. Relieved to discover that all of our bags had made it back into the country, we made our way through customs, happy to be greeted by our good friend Blake who was waiting patiently to pick us up. Despite it being past midnight when we reached Sherwood Park a.k.a. HOME, there were few immediate signs of tiredness ... the kids were just eager to rush into the house and check everything out.

No sooner had we opened the front door then we were greeted by our favourite four-legged friend who seemed to remember just who we were and was more than delighted to see us :-) Both house and cat were looking well cared for, thanks to Emily our house-sitter :-)

At this point, we have to give a big shout out to all the people who helped hold down the fort back at home so that we didn’t have to worry about a thing. We were in good hands thanks to Blake & Karen, Emily, Maria McT, and various friends and neighbours who just kept an eye on things for us... a big “Thank You” to you all.

A slight downer on the homecoming occurred when looking for toothbrushes before bed ... although our bags made it to Edmonton, it wasn’t without loss.....the US “TSA” had felt the need to break open one of our bags to inspect the contents (tolerable) and then proceeded to repack it with all the aplomb of a drunk monkey in the dark, wearing boxing gloves ... everything was jammed in under force and bent or damaged, including the African Tribal Ceremonial Necklace that we had carefully stowed and carried throughout many countries without the slightest scratch for three months. Darn those US authorities; the only losses or travel issues we’ve had on the entire trip have all been thanks to US governmental agencies of one sort or another! If it weren’t for good friends there, I think we’d aim to stay clear of the US in the future, purely because of the red tape and the powers that be. Ok rant over! .... “honey, who are those men in black suits & dark glasses who just pulled up outside in the black Lincoln Towncar?”

The next few days are expected to be a little crazy with the kids returning to school on Monday and Derek to work. No doubt it will take us a week or two to settle down and find our feet again. Apparently we’re exuding a zombie aura so a few nights good sleep are in order. Now that we’re home, we’ll take a week or two to see how things go before we post our concluding thoughts on this trip.
Stay tuned for the final word... Regular readers will have have vacariously run, walked, stumbled, laughed and cried with us throughout the trip, but in retrospect what are the highlights and lowlights, the moments, countries, people, foods, etc that will live with us forever? And are we different, have we learned anything about ourselves as well as about the World we live in? We'll enjoy a glass of wine or two writing that blog entry ... until then, take care.
