Where I stayed
A short time later we arrived at our campground in Key West and spent the evening setting up camp and getting ourselves familiar with the island for our outing the next day.
We have found that the weather can change in an instant here. It was 80 degrees and clear when we tucked ourselves into the trailer for the night but we awoke suddenly in the middle of the night to find it had started to rain and lightning was putting on a show for us in the distance
On Monday morning we readied ourselves for a day at the beach. We packed a lunch, drinks, some books and magazines and headed for Smathers Beach, the largest and most popular on Key West. The water here was just as beautiful as everything we had passed on our way to the island, and we quickly staked out a spot with our towels and chairs. The day passed leisurely on the sand, interrupted only by a few trips to cool off in the shallow water. I found that at 100 feet out I could sit on the bottom and keep my head above water (perfect for a refreshing dip). When we finally decided that we'd had enough we headed back to camp for a shower to get rid of the extra sand that came back with us and to do a little laundry. It was a really pleasant evening in camp and even though it was still warm, there was a nice breeze blowing the whole time. We're looking forward to another day here on the beach before we head back up to Miami!
