La Fonda
Entry 20 of 53 | show all | print this entry |
While our eco-hostal provides everything we could hope for on several fronts, the one thing it lacked was a dinner worth eating (a lesson learned from the previous evening's crunch chicken buffet.
Motivated by hunger...we make a night drive to the hills sourrounding Armenia in search of the locally recommended La Fonda Bistro. As is now custom, we abide by the directions to the best of our ability, don't find the place, stop to re-ask for completely different set of hand gesture directions, and eventually stumble upon our planned destination.
In this case, every effort was well worth it. It is no secret that Colombia has a tough reputation, however, that would soon change if more people took the time to eat and stay in this exceedingly tranquil area. Seated upon a rustic balcony overlooking the region we were treated to an unforgettable time. La Fonda's service, food and wine are second to none, and it is quietly found in the foothills of the Colombian Andes. Our steaks were tender, large and tasty. The wine was impressive and priced fairly, in addition the ambiance created by the personal touch of the proprietor himself created a savory experience none of us expected. A great evening of gourmet proportions dicovered in Colombia found after going the extra mile.
The coffe zone of Colombia has a lot to offer in the way of natural beauty and natural accomodatons. Although not as initially obvious as some of the more developed tourist areas, part of this area's vibe is the relative obscurity of its reputation and the efforts of its people to make you take notice and spread the word. The La Fonda is a leading example.
