Day 2 to Day 4 - August 13, 2011 to August 15, 2011 – Srikot – Auli
The drive to Auli (actually anyplace in Uttrakhand) was nothing but breathtaking. Mountains, rivers, the five prayags we crossed. Couldn't capture all in the camera, but sure will stay etched in the mind.

Auli – A skiing resort in the winters. We were there when it was technically off season. One of the most luxurious places we stayed in the whole trip of ours. The resort had been redone for the recent Winter Asian Games and was just super comfortable.

We checked in, freshened up and the people at the resort told us there is a hanuman temple on top about a kilometer of a walk. We walked up in the evening (quite a walk through steep steps) to the temple. "Awesomeness “ is the word that comes to my mind J. What a sight the rainbow was. The birds up there, the slight drizzle we were caught in. Gave us a taste of what would meet us in the days to come.

Next day was a trek I will remember for a long time to come. Gorson Point. We told the GMVN people we need and guide and decided we will pack some food and trek it to Gorson Point early in the morning. The guide dint turn up in the morning and the TRH people told us we could meet him about a kilometer away.

One kilometer of a walk told me how much I lacked any kind of training to trek. In less than half an hour I was huffing and panting. It was also difficult to walk in the constant rain. I thought I was prepared to walk with the day pack, but soon the shoulder started to give away.

The route and the occasional birding kept me going. I reminded myself, with every step that this is just the beginning, the acclimatization for the trek ahead. (Little did I know then, what was awaiting me in the valley of flowers J) .

We trekked 9 kms one way to Gorson point. The Himalayan Griffons by the dozen was the highlight of the day. I clicked till my camera refused to click anymore. Griffons 10 feet away. Reminded me of how we clicked vultures in Ramnagara.

We celebrated Independence day in Auli at the resort. After a short flag hoisting session and some sweets distribution, we set out for some local birding around the resort. Very eventful trip cos we saw one bird which we then thought was the great barbet and turned out to be a woodpecker at like 5 feet distance. J
