Vietnam....Episode 1
Entry 2 of 20 | show all | print this entry |
Well we are finally here, jetlagged, exhausted but here! The journey started off quite well, the girls were very impressed with my small rucksack (Caitriona's got stuck in the door of her apartment when we were leaving so I felt quite smug), but then I started getting all freaked out that I didn't bring enough stuff.......but I can always buy more hahahaa.
The flights were ok, I didn't freak out - except for when Caitriona made me look out the window to see the snow because we were going over Russia at the time, and it was beautiful and everything but then I started to remember I was on a big metal bus hurtling though the sky........then I had a glass of wine and I was fine again.
Otherwise the flight was ok the food wasn't too horrible and the movies were ok. Had a bit of a scary moment in Hanoi airport when my bag was taking ages to arrive and the girls all had theirs. I was so tired I was nearly crying, and I could see the girls were trying to be brave and positive but I could see the fear on their faces too! (I started to get all paranoid in case it was like the time in London when I was waiting ages for my bag and freaking out that it got lost, but it was on the carousel the whole time I had just forgotton what it looked like) But it appeared just in the nick of time, and as soon as we went out of departures there was a man from our hotel waiting to collect us.....bliss. We were trying to look at everything out the window of the car as we went past, but we kept falling asleep from exhaustion, so as soon as we got to the hotel we went for a little power nap.
The hotel is lovely, everyone is very helpful and friendly and the rooms are nice (with a hairdryer woo hoo!). Hanoi is crazy. I don't know what side of the road people drive on because they drive on every side. I have not seen a traffic light yet! You can't really walk on the footpaths because the shops have goods displayed there and every other bit of footpath has got a motorbike on it. So you walk on the road, which was seriously scary at the start. But now we are totally used to it and have discovered that the only way to get across the road is just walk and don't look and the motorbikes kind of go around you. We had a nice dinner and beer on the lake, where it is really pretty and then we walked down the night market where you can buy absolutely anything you could every want. For nothing. Everything is so cheap. Have to have an early night tonight because of exhaustion............have loads of plans for the next few days, Cait is trying to track down a snake resturant where they kill the snake in front of you and then you drink the blood and they cook the snake for you.....yum (Solenn is going on about eating the beating heart raw but we might give that bit a miss). Well we were going to have an early night but now me and Solenn are going out to find some Bia Hoi which is the cheapest beer in the world!
