After a small amount of last minute planning due to a communication breakdown, we booked ourselves a bed in a Hotel next to the train station. We had made a special trip to Frankfurt to see a Japanese friend who works for Subaru. He is based in Germany as a test and development engineer. However over the weekend, until immediately before our train left Hamburg, we were unable to contact with Shiratori, so booked some accommodation. Once we did make contact and made plans to meet for a meal, he said "I though you would stay at my apartment" Haha it was exactly what we were thinking!!
We had a whirlwind tour of the center of Frankfurt, it was actually quite pretty, contrary to some reports we had had that implied it was just a big glitzy commercial center full of banks. Well it was that, but did have some nice other buildings, even if they were rebuilt after being bombed
After a bit of discussion, it was decided that Shiratori was to take us to a Japanese Restaurant for dinner. It was an amazing meal, with raw fish and hot stuff and all the trimmings. Very nice.
The next morning we were collected by Shiratori, where we travelled to Colonge in a Subaru sti. The purpose of the trip was to actually visit the Nurburg Ring, but first we did a quick tour sight seeing around the centre of Cologne with a special visit to the Dome, a large amazing cathedral, we walked to the top, only 509 steps. We also caught up Wally a friend of Shiratori's and had a massive traditional german lunch with him. I was almost physically sick after eating 2\3 of my roast leag of pork.
We next fled down the autobahn to the Nurburg ring, it is situated in the country north of Cologne. It is a huge track, I was very impressed. We went for 3 laps (actually I got out before the third lap) around the track, it was incredibly fast. We hit 200 km/hr along the straights and over 100 around the tight bends. I tried taking photos but the G-forces didn't allow me to keep the camera still enough so most of them were blurry. On one of the laps we past this large flash BMW that had hit the barrier and had a massive scrape along the entire drivers side, we felt sad for him.
After our laps we mucked around watching cars on the track and stuff and that was all fun. At about 8.00pm we headed back for Frankfurt, had another lovely Japanese meal and hit the sack. The next day Stewart and I did some sight seeing in Frankfurt, we visited the German Stock Exchange, not very exciting, but interesting. We found an awesome shoppping mall that had the best views from the top floor of the city.
We left for Zurich around lunchtime.
