Best: The Dunes
Worst: Getting Stuck in the dunes
Unexpected: The super winding roads and near the edge experience of climbing a huge mountain on route 66.
As we left the KOA to try to make our way back to the Sea Lion Caves, Kelly asked if we could stop at the ATV rental place next to the KOA
After talking with the store clerk, the girls and I talked about whether it was a good idea or not. They really wanted to do this, so I decided I should suck it up and do it. I secretly wanted to anyway.
So, we rented a 3 person dune buggy. (They both could have had their own ATV, but that was past my comfort zone--oh yeah, so was driving one!)
It was awesome! The dunes were bigger than anything I've ever seen. There were hills everywhere. Sherkston Beaches' dunes in their heyday are minuscule to these dunes. In fact, The Oregon Dunes are the largest Dunes in the US.
I was nervous about going over the big hills and of course, got stuck on one of the hills. In fact, every time I tried to get to the top of the same hill- got stuck. Kelly ran up the hill to flag other riders to help us get out of the sand. I was able to lift the vehicle, but it was too big to move. Of course, we all thought the boys were very cute!
I know Kelly was a bit mad at me because I wimped out on the hills and was ready to go back after our hour was up. I hope she got over it.
It was a great experience
We never made it to the Sea Lion Caves, as the trip to Klamath Falls was 6 hours.
We had a nice lunch in Grant's Pass and then went on to Klamath Falls. The Koa is ok. No frills. We are vegging out tonight...the room has a TV. The girls are in heaven!
Tomorrow we venture to our first National Park of the trip- Crater Lake. Then on to Bend.
