Today we participated in Children's Day. Children’s Day is once a year and it is the second Saturday in January. The "students" as they call their children are honored. Community carnivals/fairs are held and everything is geared for the student. We saw dancing, singing, games, teaching sessions, prizes, etc. The food was all things children would like. There were 100s of children of all ages. In Pi Jip’s family it is tradition to give the children money on Children’s Day. Everyone was very happy today.

I also learned that the Thai’s have Mother’s Day (August 12 – Queen’s Birthday), Father’s Day (Dec 5 – King’s Birthday) and Family Day (April). There is no Grandparent’s Day in Thailand.

We returned to campus around 10:30. Today the students attended Thai cooking class. Nong Maew is the lead teacher and Aj Pot, Pi Na, Abigail and the Thai buddies are all helping. Of course, Greg is involved as well. He has typed the recipes so the students can take them home and hopefully replicate the dishes in the States. The students loved the class. They are making Masaman Curry, Pad Thai, and Som Tom. The students ate their Pad Thai and Som Tom and the Masaman Curry is going to be for dinner. Aj Pot and AJ Maew also made some amazing fried chicken. The key is the marinade. Oh so good. Greg knows how to make it so we will have to make it when we get home.

There were a lot of people on campus today. Pi Jip and the faculty were to interview 200 prospectives students for June admission. I found out that you MUST be at least 150 cm tall and I think 40 Kilograms in weight. If you are too short or too light, you can not perform the required tasks of a nurse. The are tightening the criteria. Also, you can not be HIV + upon admission to nursing school. I found this to be very interesting information since I serve on the A&P Committee at Messiah College. The students are tired today. It has been a busy week. So, everyone is taking a nap and catching up on their journals and emails

I am tired today as well so I am kicking back a little bit. I have to work on getting materials ready for English Class in the village. We leave for the village on Monday and will not have internet contact until we get back on Wednesday evening.

Tonight the students went shopping on the streets of Chiang Mai University. This is an area geared for the college student. Apparently, the students were not as interested in the market as they were Karaoke so they all rented a Karaoke room (170 baht= $5.50) for 1 hr. They seemed to really have a good time.

I forgot to tell you a little secret. On Friday night at the Red Cross Fair, Jeremy was asked to pose for a picture with Miss Chiang Mai. She was wearing her tiera and a beautiful gown. Brianne and Jeremy had just separated b/c we were taking Bri back to her hotel. Jeremy stayed at the fair with his Thai buddy. As we were leaving we saw all of these people gathered together and camera flashes were lighting the sky. We were curious as to what was going on. As we walked over to the people we noticed that is was Jeremy posing with Miss Chiang Mai. He was smiling ear to ear and everyone was making happy noises. Well, you should have seen Jeremy’s face when he saw Bri standing there with her mouth opened. It was so funny. We laughed for a very long time. Of course we now have something else to tease him with. It was priceless.
