One of Us: One Year Later
I spent the rest of the day and into this morning transcribing clips from the interviews for the captions. Tough choices, so much of what everyone said was great, it was hard to transcribe it all! I'd love feedback if anyone has the time, any and all comments are welcome. We're working in a vacuum, to a degree, and although *I* think they're all great photos, well, you're the audience, so let us know what you think...
We have extended our stay at the Houston Leisure RV Park yet another day... but we have to leave tomorrow because our site is reserved for someone else. Unfortunately, the time we've spent making the photos available is the price to pay in this digital age. It has taken us four days to do everything to get them online. Four days. Whew!!
Since this is also supposed to be a vacation of sorts, we did take time yesterday to take a dip in the pool (Chris was looking a lot like Yahoo Serious after several hours of non-stop photoshopping, and I was getting concerned he'd just spontaneously combust), and, a game of shuffleboard... yes, that's right, shuffleboard. It's not just for old folks (unless, by playing, it makes *us* old folks).
I started off much like I always do, winning.
But Chris, in his usual style, spends the first game figuring out the playing field and strategy.
Then, because he has gotten behind, his competitive nature kicks in and he, consequently, kicks my butt.
Again and again and again. Even though I made him switch to playing left-handed (chivalry and all that), he still beat me. Sad, really.
Today we are going out to shoot (unless of course it rains like it is threatening to do). I swear. We have to... or else we will have come to Houston for naught... the bad news is that now we have seven days to travel more than 1500 miles. We have to get to Utah so that a) we can dump the trailer before driving him to Vegas so he can fly to Germany b) I don't have to drive the trailer by myself from Vegas to Kanab, UT. Between us, I think what's going to happen is that we will find people to shoot along the way, not want to drive all day long and get behind. Then we'll end up pulling into Vegas next Saturday morning around 5 am, park in the airport parking lot and sleep for an hour, then Chris will get on the iron bird and head off to Germany, leaving me to find my way to the Best Friends Animal Shelter... don't get me wrong, it's not that I *can't* do it, I just don't wanna do it is all...
It's funny, one of the things that Chris and I have in common is a "buy now, pay later" attitude about life*. It is, as you might imagine, a dangerous trait to have in common because no one stands up and says, well, wait a minute, is this the most prudent course of action? Instead, we are more likely to egg each other on, like convincing ourselves that all this work had to be done NOW instead of say, oh, I don't know, in flight on the way to Germany? After he got back? While I was in Utah... and so on and so on... We could have, had we been planning ahead, shot in Houston for two days, got on the road and moved more leisurely across the country to Utah. But hey, like I said... why do today what you can do tomorrow?
*Before anyone (my parents) spits up their coffee, let me note here that yes, it's true, I am more inclined to be the voice of reason, and am usually the one who does have to reign Chris in, but as anyone who's known me for years and years (my parents) will tell you, that's only because someone has to, and it's not gonna be Chris, right? But it is my nature to "buy now, pay later" and just because I've been un-true to my nature for the last few years doesn't mean it's not still there... I am on vacation, after all, and I don't wanna be the grownup on vacation!! So, I'm not. So there.
Backpackers Pantry Mashed Potatoes with Cheddar and Bacon
8 out of 10
"Too thick," says Chris, "I don't taste the ham, much... and it tastes chemical-y"
I think it tastes awesome, personally. He gave it a 5-6, I give it a 10, hence the 8. He says if it was all you had, you'd be hating it. I say it's a good "rib-sticker."
Adventure Foods Bakepacker Savory Onion and Dill Bread
10 out of 10
How it's possible to make bread (biscuit, really) in a bag is beyond me... the taste is amazing. Run, don't walk, to your nearest vendor...
Backpackers Pantry Green Beans Almondine
8 out of 10
It is vegetables after all ;-) Actually, Chris gave it an 8, I give it a 9 because it's hard to make green beans taste amazing, no matter what you do to them... but they rehydrate really well and there is a taste, which surprised me.
I made all of these together as a brunch. The bread and potatoes were a bit redundant, I agree... one or the other should have been eggs but I'm out of egg products... clearly I did not order enough ;-)
Backpackers Pantry Chicken Cashew Curry
9 out of 10
Chris couldn't find any chicken in his portion... that's because it was all in mine. I *really* wanted chutney with mine, but as far as without the condiments, it was exactly what it says it is... I keep waiting for one of these to taste like something completely different, but so far, they're tasting just like anything you'd make at home... You can't even say that all freeze-dried meals with chicken are ass like you used to, it's just not true anymore... I'm telling you, it's affordable, it's tasty, it's good for you... why are we still eating preservatives and chemicals?
Why? because we like to, that's why... Chris went to the store yesterday to get some water (I can't drink sulphur water, so I have to do the bottled jug water for drinking and re-hydrated food) anyway, he came back with Starburst, Reece's cups, kit-kat bars, Bugles, and some junk food for him. We ate it like Augustus Gloop in the Wonka factory... gone in 60 seconds.... watch your fingers, kids, you could lose one!! Embarrassing really, I personally couldn't figure out which to eat first, so I put the Reeces in the freezer and slammed the starbursts... We both felt sick as a dog and could hardly make it through dinner.
