Our last few days in Ko Phi Phi were spent generally lazing around getting ready for the next big journey to Austrailia. I want as much tan as possible before we go there as we're expecting it to be very hot. We decided that it was time to dump some of our clothes and buy new and this was the place to do it, so we went shopping. Dean bought a couple of pairs of shorts and some new t-shirts. I bought a new dress to wear on New Year's Eve in Sydney and some shorts. We've got used to wearing the same outfits over and over again by now.
We didn't really go out drinking but instead chose to take some back to drink on the beach. It was so nice to have the luxury of a beach all to yourself with the exception of the odd person walking past. It is important to us to take advantage of this as the situation will be quite different in Oz. We decided to have a midnight swim again and this time we went commando - it was fantastic. Such a feeling of freedom. We have taken pictures but you're not allowed to see them!
We have been buying our take-out's and ice from the same scruffy shop that sold to us on election day. The people from this shop seem very poor, there is an old lady in there that lays on a camp bed inside the shop all day watching the TV. Then there is a young woman and a young man that run it. They have a small child about 1 year old, just toddling. He is so cute - he toddles up and down the shop all day, barefoot and always with an ice cube clutched in his hand. Yesterday I was just getting some beers out of the fridge and something scuttled straight between my legs. It was a huge rat! It was obviously not very well as it couldn't really move it's back legs. I looked at it after I realised what it was, it was cowering under the fruit counter. Dean reckoned it had probably been poisoned and I think he must be right. We have seen a few rats around here darting about on the streets late at night after everyone has packed up their stalls. There are also a lot of cats around but they seem scared of the rats - they just sit there with their ears pricked up watching them. They don't make any effort to chase them. Maybe they are too hot to be bothered or maybe they know something we don't.
We had told Rat Pai that we were leaving on the 28th and on our last night he came over to see us on our porch. He had brought someone with him. As I've said previously, his English is not very good and his friend was translating. We owed him about five nights rent and he told us that he wanted to thank us so much for staying when there is no electricity or air conditioning. He apologised (again) for things not being right for us. He said "You are my friends, you are like my family, I want no more money from you." It was so, so kind of him especially as he's just lost all of his Christmas business. He told us that we were welcome here anytime at a discounted rate and that anyone who comes there and mentions our names will get a discount also. He promised that he would send a couple of people round to our bungalow at 1pm tomorrow to carry our backpacks to the ferry. We thanked him and told him we would love to come back and see him and his family again.
To anyone reading this, the name of the resort is Sand Seaview resort. If you walk to the far left of the pier you arrive at. The bungalows are opposite the beach to the far left. They are the only air conditioned bungalows there and they are lovely. You could not wish to meet nicer people. They continued to give us free bottled water and feed us right up until the morning we left.
