however when we stepped off the plane the heat just hit us, we both thought 'this is more like it', especially after just having 2 months of rain.
the backpackers sent a bus out to pick us up and the hostel was a 10 minute drive from the airport.
Broome is a small underdeveloped town with not much going on at all. theres a few shops and pubs but loads of accomodation.
the hostel was great, nice and clean with a bar, a pool and a massive CLEAN kitchen. our room was a bit dingy but we wernt planning on spending much time there anyway.
we woke the next morning to nothing but rain with the forecast saying it will be like that for the next few days. GREAT!!!
we got the free shuttle bus into town and did the british thing and headed straight to McDonalds, well we needed something to cheer us up. we also got some shopping for at the hostel. for the rest of the day we just sat in the bar area, played pool and chatted to a few more people.
Sunday morning it was exactly the same, rain, rain and more rain. it hadnt stopped for 2days now and we were beginning to wish that we hadnt come to Broome after all. Again we just stayed in the bar and met a whole load of people from Scotland, Sweden, Ireland and 2 Cockney lads with their girlfriends who we got on really well with.
Monday morning we woke and it had finally stopped raining, the sun wasnt shining as it was quite overcast but we could feel it was getting warmer. we decided to head to cable beach just to have a look as we hadnt seen it yet. we took a wrong turn and ended up walking round the middle of nowhere for about 2 hours, there was no cars about or even any houses, and no we didnt end up finding the beach!!
we eventually made our way back and once again we chilled out in the bar. we were told the weather would be hot the next day so we finally had something to look forward too.
When we was in Perth I booked a surprise trip for Dean for the Thursday we were in Broome, it was a 2 hour tour round Broome on the back of a Harley Davidson bike.
we were still in bed on tuesday morning when I heard a motorbike pulling up, i went out and checked to see it was for us and it was. i had to run in to dean and wake him up telling him he didnt even have time to brush his teeth. he was angry but as soon as he saw the bike his face lit up. the trip took us to all of Broome's sights and tourist spots including Cable Beach, Town Beach, and Broome town centre. He took us to some real life dinosaur footprints, to the Harbour and to a place called Anastacias Pool. This was where a man whose wife was ill with arthritis built a small pool and every day he carried her 10 minutes through rocks and small cliffs to the pool so he could bathe her. a really simple thing like that is a massive tourist attraction in broome. we went past a small site where all the aboriginals live, it was a field with a few tents dotted round, the ones that had tents were the lucky ones, most of them lived in cardboard boxes with a small fire for heat and cooking.
by the time the harley tour had finished the sun had come out and we headed to the beach to spend a few hours in the sun. it was so hot, the sun was really powerful and we could only sit in it for a short period at a time. on the night we chilled in the bar again before i went to bed at about 11. dean rolled in at 5 am drunk from red wine.
10.00 the next morning the sun was shining and I wanted to go to the beach so i dragged dean out of bed down to the beach. again the sun was real strong and I ended up getting burnt on my face and my neck. on the night we had booked a camel ride up cable beach. we was on the camel called Sascha with nme at the front and dean at the back. the camel behind us obviously didnt like dean much and spat all down the back of his leg, his breath stunk too! the ride was really relaxing and we saw the stunning sunset whilst riding back up the beach. it was definately worth doing.
on the night we headed out with the cockneys - Simon, Alice, Andy and Lynne to the first of Broomes 2 nightclubs called Tokio Joes. It looked nothing like a club in Birmingham, it was basically a large tin shed and thats no exaggeration. the music was ok and it went on till 4 so we had a bit of a dance and a drink then got a taxi back
we slept in till 12 then decided to head to the beach (again). on the night we had a few quite ones in the bar and had an early night.
on thursday evening there was was a thing called stairway to the moon. once a month when the tide is far out and there is to be a full moon everyone heads to town beach to see the staircase. as the moon rises over the ocean it creates what looks like steps, and as the moon is just above the ocean it looks like you could take the steps all the way up to the moon. it was stunning, although the pictures dont do it any justice.
we then went back to cable beach and had a lovely meal on a beach front restaurant. one of our friends that worked in the restaurant said that everyone was heading to Broomes other club called the Oasis bar. so we headed up there with the cockneys and Alex the mad Yankee. it was great, a massive outdoor club with loads of bars and a massive stage. it was like being in Ibiza. all of a sudden the DJ announced that there was to be a wet Tshirt competition going on!! however it wasnt a wet t-shirt comp, it was more like a soft lesbian porn show! the girls whipped their tshirts off at the first opportunity and started getting jiggy with each other. dean was loving it, as was every other male in the place!! and naturally, the girl with the fake boobs won! it was so strange that in a small town like Broome there was a club like this, it was great fun though
friday was our last day so we couldnt really do much, we just sat by the pool for a bit and went into the town for a few hours. we went to the crocodile park for the 3pm feeding show. there was 9000 crocs at this one park, both salties and freshies. some of them were huge. the guide was hanging a dead chicken over the crocs fence's and they were leaping right out of the water to get it. we stroked a baby croc, it felt like plastersine, all goey and squashy!! when the tour finished we went for a little walk on our own and dean thought that some of the crocs were being a bit boring so he tried to anoy some of them by kicking the fences to wake them up a bit. luckily none of them were interested and just ignored him.
our flight was at 9 so we had to head back to get the bus to the airport. we said our goodbyes and arranged to meet the cockneys in Darwin, which was both of our next stops.
we had a lovely relaxing time in Broome but were glad we only stayed for a week as there isnt much else to do.
