  1. One of the border abbeys in Scotland. The others include
Jedburgh, Melrose, and Dryburgh. I sadly did not have time to visit them
all, but I am glad that I got to visit at least one. These abbeys are all
in ruins now, since they were ransacked by King Henry VIII during the
    Reformation Kelso

. Melrose is famous for being the place where Robert the
Bruce's heart is buried, and Jedburgh is famous for its association with
Mary, Queen of Scots. It was a cold, dreich day as the Scots would say,
but the abbey was quite lovely and the town of Kelso is a really cute
small town. I walked along the river and had lunch before visiting the
abbey and then heading back to Edinburgh. Kelso, is really out in the middle of nowhere, and can only be reached by bus, but at least it could be reached by public transportation...thank you Great Britain :) .
But the countryside was so lovely, I could not complain. The Borders
landscape is quite different from the Highlands. It is still mountainous,
but it seemed more homey? I don't know if that's the right word or
not…okay so I know this is not a great comparison but the Highlands are
like the Rockies and the Borders are like the Appalachian
    mountains…maybe  that's why I
thought they were homey, because they reminded me of the North Carolina
landscape…but it was still distinctly, beautifully Scottish...
