My vote to go to the lesser known ruins of Ek-Balam were trumped by the driver's desire to go to Chichen Itza. I had been there once before as a kid, but I didn't really remember it. The iconic Castillode Kukulcan inspires awe as you first enter (once you manage to get past the first wave of vendors.) Too bad some American tourist feel off the steps a few years ago, so now you can't climb on any of the ruins. From some vantage points, the court of the thousand columns feels like the columns go on forever. The Great Ball court is pretty daunting - I'd hate to have to play to the death...
After the long, hot walk through Chichen Itza, a startlingly cold dip in the underground Cenote Dzitnup felt fabulous. There were more bats hanging from the ceiling than I've ever seen before (I couldn't help worrying that I was going to get pooped on, though.)
