Sihanoukville is trying to be Thailand, and getting there too. While we only had a night here, we did sample pretty much all of the delights available at a Thai beach (well, the ones you can tell your folks about at least): very nice beach hut type accommodation, English speaking bar staff, cheap booze and Western and local foods, gorgeous beach lined with cheap bars and loungers, local women and children selling trinkets, beach food and massages, sun splitting the stones... it's great! A lot less developed than the Thai version but as I said, getting there. Loads of parties on the beach, each trying to outdo the next one with freebies: free food, free shots on the dancefloor all night, two for one deals, you name it. We spent a couple of hours watching an amazing lightning storm over the sea from the safety of the bar and went for a night swim before retiring. Marvellous.
