We arrived here in Kapit yesterday evening at dusk after two 4 hour plus boat rides from Kuching. Lots of logging evident on the way here, huge piles of logs sitting outside of factory-like buildings, ships full of logs heading down towards the coast - bit depressing that. Arriving here was excellent though - locals stopping to say "Hello! Welcome to Kapit!" and then continuing on their merry way. No ulterior motives here - not something you get everywhere that's for sure. While searching for a place to stay with our new travel buddy Sonia from the US we saw the old folk practicing tai chi in the main square to tinny Chinese music from a small radio, friendly local boys playing badminton on a building site, and even a nice sunset. We are now trying to organise a trip to a traditional longhouse in the jungle where huge extended families all live under one roof. It's turning into a drama though having found lots of scare stories online about guides that are recommended in the guidebook. But we'll manage it! Met another Irish guy today who was bitten by a scorpion last night and had to go to hospital, so a little hassle organising a jungle trip is hardly a big deal...
