Finally we have arrived in Argentina, and the sun is beating down on a beautiful, modern, cosmopolitan Buenos Aires. We are staying in the beautiful old building that is the Hostel Inn ( http://www.hostel-inn.com/ ), very central and really quite nice. After rainy southern Brazil, with the difficulties with Portuguese and the general haring it around the place on buses it's great to be back in the land of Espaņol and back in the sun! (Despite the way the line on the map looks, we didn't come through Uruguay, which was an option, but rather overland direct into Argentina to the north of Uruguay. We'll hopefully dip in there over the holidays) Having said that, I reckon they hired the most friendly man in Brazil to see us off at the border crossing last night, and the surliest man in Argentina to "welcome" us to his country. The story from the Brazilians is that the Argentinians are a bit less friendly, more image conscious, than they are, and indeed it looks that way watching all the well dressed beautiful people suited and booted in the business district, but I'll reserve judgment on that one for now.
We've had a nice wander about, a couple of cafe curtados (espresso coffees with a glass of fizzy water on the side along with a biscuit), a nice meal in a posh restaurant for really very little money - it's all good.
But once again we're off on an overnight bus, this time to Puerto Madryn, hopefully to see some whales all going well. We'll be back in BA for Christmas with la famille Conlisk (the extended one) and for once this is a place that I really want to spend more time in. It's also cheaper than Brazil, which is a bit unexpected for us because our guidebook is from before the currency collapse in 2001. But the beautiful steaks and gorgeous local wines can wait till Christmas.
By the way we've had the phone unlocked, finally, and so can receive calls and texts on the numbers we sent to members of our inner sanctum (ie our parents and sisters...)
