So Rio was great but we had to leave. Hectic place. We took a bus and a ferry to this place Ilha Grande which has no cars and an 'interesting' electricity supply. Last evening the rains came pouring down and I stood on the balcony of our new room. I could hear and see that the top of one of the electricity poles was fizzing and sparking so I went to get my camera. As I was zooming in, the noise increased to a crescendo and boom! A one-metre diameter explosion. and on the camera? Some sparks. Damn it. The one that got away and all that. So we watched some more, two more explosions before the local electricity lads shut off the power and the fire went out. It was like the entertainment for the village for the night with a crowd of spectators crowding around to watch

. The best bit was their illumination of the problem - they used a mobile cake trolley which has lights in it (and cakes) - strange to see. Might have to try some later. Nothing much else to do! The only options are walk or take a boat to one of the other fantastic beaches on the island. It's tough.Took a boat around the island to the Lopes Mendes beach which was fantastic - finally the blazing sun and surf we'd expected here! After a great day lazing about the beach and trying frantically not to burn (came back with a white coating from over-application of sunblock) we reluctantly decided to hit the road. Beaches are cheap, but Patagonia's where it's really at for us at the moment. So we braced ourselves to start really covering the miles...
