Flying half way around the world by oneself was not as difficult as everyone makes it out to be. Sure I rushed from gate to gate with my 4 layovers, but overall I never felt like it was something I couldn't handle.
I arrived in Florence, luckily, with a friend from my home university. She and I knew VERY little Italian and so at least we felt each others pain in that regard. The ONLY thing I can successfully complain about is the fact that my luggage was "lost." Now I'm going to provide a little back story since the end result is quite interesting. *When I left CA I checked my 2 suitcases and was planning on stowing my small duffel bag in the overhead compartment as my carry on
I have no complaints about the flights to Europe (in fact my international flight was one for the books ;) ). However, now we're back to reality- back to Florence.
Waiting for my luggage to arrive on the carousel wasn't anything unusual. However, only 1 of my 3 bags appeared. The other 2 were god knows elsewhere. What's sadly ironic about all this was that I had packed my carry-on duffel with anything I might need JUST IN CASE MY LUGGAGE WAS LOST (including ALL of my intimates)- and what ends up happening? That very safety net ends up being swept away into lost baggage land. What's even worse is that the only bag that arrived in Florence was my suitcase filled with ONLY clothes- no toiletries or intimates whatsoever. The bag that I could have survived a few days without was of course the only bag that surfaced. Moreover, I only had my cheap pair of flip flops to get me through however long I was to survive without my luggage
Such is my life.
SO, luckily I was not the only one that had learned that their luggage had been lost and upon arrival to my hostel I forged a bond with said person so that we might be able to get our bags back together (meaning splitting the high fee for driving to the airport and back).
Long story short, I was fortunate enough to have my bags waiting at the airport for me (even though I had no idea whilst on my way) when I tagged along with this other individual whom had received a call that his bags were in fact there.
If I were to chose 2 words to describe my first night in Florence, they would be: Mosquito Bites and Blisters. Match made in heaven wouldn't you say?
Needless to say, I was over the moon to move into my future home for the next 4 months of this journey.
