I got to National thirty five minutes before take off and was dumbfounded by the lack of any lines to get through security. I literally just walked right in walked through security with no lines and got on the plane. I have yet to miss a flight!
I had eight hours to hang in Toronto. I could sit around in the airport, or I could catch a bus to the nearest Metro and head downtown to get in a few sights. I chose the later. Eight hours in the airport seems a bit excessive, even on a good day
As I meandered down Front Street I found something between a cross between Eastern Market of Washington DC and its much more intense cousin the Westside Market of Cleveland. In Toronto they called it the St. Lawrence Market. Jackpot! I was starving and this place had the potential to take care of that situation in a heart beat. The St. Lawrence is a huge turn of the century warehouse that operates as a sort of open market where one can buy meat’s, pastries, candies and anything in between. No matter what, I knew this was going to be better then anything I could have obtained at the airport. I was not wrong. They had every sort of sausage one could imagine. There were more butchers then they eye could see. If I lived around here I would definitely eat here often. I choose a veal parmesan sandwich. It was awesome and super filling. Another cool thing is that they had outdoor seating so you sort of felt you were in a German beer hall. Just sit at a table and see what happens. After filling up I then headed out to find a bar to kill a little time and to check the scores to the local sporting events
I found my way to the "Jersey Giant" an English pub down the street. After filling up on some Fullers “London Pride” and listen to locals complain about oddly enough Minnesota Vikings Football and how awful the franchise is. (Obviously they were ignorant to real pain and I was in no mood to get into it with them…just ask any Browns fan out there.) I headed back to the airport so that I can maintain my streak of never missing flight.
