The cookery school is run by Gay Ray, who we didn't get to meet, who always dreamt of setting up a cookery school from when she was a little girl learning to cook with her grandmother.
We were picked up from our guesthouse in an airconditioned mini bus, which is always nice. the rest of our group were already inside and didn't seem very chatty. it was mainly made up of one large family, who got right on my nerves.
we arrvied and met Mem, our lovely instructor, super smiley and bubbly. first off we went on a market tour to learn all about thai ingredients, such as all the different rices, (there are hundreds), how they make coconut milk, the different types of noodles and sauces
after a short tour we had some time to wander about and take some snaps or buy things. when we reconveened i noticed everyone had these great looking fruity frozen drinks. i was pretty hot so the condensation running down the sides was like a siren call to me. so i popped off to get one, and of course, the woman making it seemed to about a million things before she make my drink, so i stood there, with everyone glaring at me, and muttering about time keeping. made me feel pretty uncomfortable. But my freshly blended watermelon ice drink was amazing. until i got the slight fear about the ice it was made with, but then realised that as she only makes those frozen drinks i doubt she fills little ice trays with tap water over and over again and that i was probably going to be ok. also, i have been taking my probiotic religiously, so feel like my tummy (hopefully) is pretty resillient by now.
when we returned we had a quick tour of the organic herb garden, and had all the main spices and herbs explained to us, got to sniff lots of lovely smells, i love all the lemony scents from citronella , lemongrass and lemonbalm
then after a quick traditional snack given to people in greeting, which consisted of, peanut, roasted coconut pulp, ginger, lime, chilli, and shallots, covered in a palm sugar and fish sauce sryup and wrapped in a betal leaf, we began cooking!
we each choose four dishes and a curry paste to cook, and the pace was fast, chop chop chop, cook cook cook, eat eat eat!
i like to think of myself as quite a good cook, but was actually pretty dissapointed with how all my dishes turned out. but it was lots of fun, despite members of the big family hogging all the space, cooking time and generally being obnoxious.
after we had eaten, i was FULL.
it was great to see adem cooking and seeming to really enjoy it, i hate to say it, but i think his food was better than mine!
we were again driven back to our guesthouse, which was silly, as we were really close by and ended up dropping everyone else off first and being in the car for half an hour when we could have walked in ten.
on the corner of our street is an amazing lotte stand, lotte are pancakes filled with banana, or chocolate or egg, despite having eaten a feast i managed to squeeze on of those in as well.they are just too good to resist. although, adem manages to!
