As we neared the gate, I saw a place to exchange Euros for Dollars. Nope, he was short of American currency (aren't we all???). As we got to the gate Sandy said she needed a Diet Coke.
The security guy said, only if it's sealed, and when asked if there was a place to get one after security, he thought a minute and said, "No, I don't think so." OK, so Sandy went on a search for a Diet Coke in a sealed plastic bag. She came back 10 minutes later and said, there is only one place that you can get it and they can seal it for you and they require you to show your boarding pass. She had left it with me and the carry-on bags. She was not a happy camper. I said, "So, let's go though Security." She said, "No, I want a Diet Coke and I'm going to get one!" Ten minutes later, she returned with two in a sealed plastic bag. We went through security, no problem. We sat for a while in the lounge waiting to board. We made our way to near the boarding area, and that's when I saw it....a vending machine with Diet Coke in it. We both just had to laugh at that point in time! Geez! Wasted 20 minutes when we could have been enjoying a Diet Coke just after entering the secured area. Oh well!!!
Plane flight was long. More than 8 hours. Two movies though...Captain Phillips and Monument Men. Both very good.
Finally landed in MSP. Went through Customs after a 50 minute line. Got luggage. Went through Immigration. Then they asked us to re-check our bags with Delta for our flight to Bloomington. That's when the trouble began. The young lady first thought they just missed the tag and it was supposed to go to BMI. Well, no, there was no flight to BMI from MSP this afternoon. Re-checked our schedule and Delta had actually changed our flight from Saturday to Sunday...I think Bloomington service was reduced in the past three months, and I missed the change they sent to us. My error. But it didn't make me real happy. Talked to Delta. No flights to BMI today from MSP. None available to PIA. They could get one of us to Detroit and home...sorry, not an option. Even AA from ORD to BMI was full. Now it made sense why I couldn't get both sets of boarding passes in Amsterdam. The flight was for tomorrow!
That's when I pulled out the phone and said, "Hello, IHG? Can you get us a hotel for the night in Minneapolis?" Yes, last room at Crowne Plaza MSP. I'll take it. Worked well. Then I thought, you know what, if we're gonna be in MSP for the night, I want a Juicy Lucy! So, we rented a Hertz and headed to the Crowne Plaza.
I walked in and told the lady, "I think you may have just received a reservation for me." She said, I don't think so, I think we're sold out tonight." Then she looked, and sure enough it was there. She said, "How'd you do that?" Then she saw my profile...Aha, IHG Rewards Platinum Elite, and when I paid with the IHG Mastercard, she said, "Now I see, you are one of our best customers. That's how you did it." I just smiled.
We took our stuff to the room and headed to a place called "The 5-8 Club." If you haven't heard of it, it's the home of the legendary "Juicy Lucy." However, a bar called "Matt's Bar" also claims to have originated the "Jucy Lucy" (different spelling). In fact, I went here on my Major League Baseball Park quest a few years ago. I took a picture of the waitresses wearing T-shirts, which said, "Juicy Lucy...If it's spelled right, it's made right." I liked them. The place has been a restaurant since Prohibition days, and when they did a renovation in the 1960s, they found a secret driveway where cars could actually drive under the building to unload their illegal booze. Neat place. Sandy had a plain burger, but I had to have the original Juicy Lucy....two hamburger patties with cheese between them...the heat melts the cheese and it does become juicy...and delicious.
Headed back to the CP and we slept.
Thought we'd be home today, but what the heck, do we have to go back for work or something? No.
Trying to make lemonade again....when you travel you've got to expect some problems like these. But I have to admit, I did hearken back to my Business Travel Center days when more than once we told employees, "When we send you a schedule change...read it dummy!" (last word in sentence omitted, except under our breath, right BTC ladies????)
Have a pleasant evening!
