I left today on a short four day trip to Chicago to see the White Sox, tomorrow to Milwaukee to see the Brewers and Tuesday to Minneapolis to watch the Minnesota Twins. Be back Wednesday. It was an easy trip up to Chicago. I've made that trip a thousand times when I was working for ISU visiting high schools and community colleges recruiting students for ISU. One of my most favorite jobs. Brought back a lot of memories. I took the turn at Dwight on Rt 17 toward Kankakee, but cut north and then east again on Warner Bridge Road crossing the Kankakee River at Kankakee River State Park. Eventually caught I-57 North at Manteno, and on north. Took I-294 to Cicero Avenue through some of my old stomping grounds and High Schools I Good memories.

Eventually made it to US Cellular Field (however, I still want to call it Comisky Park!). Parking was an odd $23...say what? Anyway, good place about two blocks from the ballpark. Lots of people tailgating. Took some pics and especially liked that they still have the home plate from the "old Comisky" outside the ballpark. Bought a nice ticket for $55 which got me 10 rows up between the second baseman and the right fielder. Good seat.

Had something to eat I've never had before...Mexican corn off the cob. I said "corn cut off the cob." They take an ear of corn and cut it off the cob (in front of you), and they add, salt, pepper, mayo, butter and hot sauce (in pepper form)...sort of corn on the cob on steroids! Very tasty. Then I went for an Italian Beef...gotta have one in Chicago! It was messy, but very good.

Found my seat, but didn't sit down. Instead, sat in row 32, in the shade. Read the Pantagraph, and waited for someone kick me out of my seat. Interestingly enough, no one did. Some guy sat two seats over, but that's as close as it got. Even when it became overcast, I remained in my seat. Talked the guy who sat two seats away to take my pic. 13 down, 17 to go. And saw a nice family to my right with a boy who might like my baseball.

Sox Win!!! They scored 3 in the first and went on to win 8-3. The kid left in the 8th inning with his dad to run the bases after the game. I gave the ball to Mom and asked her to give it to her son. She was appreciative.

I left the park and headed to the original Home Run Inn Pizza on 31st Street. I am sure some of you midwesterners have had Home Run Inn frozen pizza, but if you haven't had the fresh pizza at the original Home Run Inn, you haven't had real Home Run Inn Pizza! Sat at the bar and had a small sausage pizza with gardernera...thanks Dan Belongia for getting me on to it. Excellent pizza. Ate about half.
Couldn't decide who to leave the rest with. Then it came to me. Bob Kaplan. Bob was a Preview Guide in 1976. I also hired him as an RA in the residence halls at ISU. Good guy. He retired last June when I did from teaching for 35 years. He also was a softball umpire for several state HS championships.

He was home when I called, and so I drove to his place in Shaumburg to deliver the leftover pizza, have a beer and watch some of the Bulls and Cubs games...both of them lost!

Then I headed North to Milwaukee. Wanted to play a golf course near Franklin, WI, so found a hotel near there, (Summerfield Suites). Ran through a nasty rain storm on the way, but made it and hit the hay. It was a good day!

More tomorrow...Milwaukee Brewers game!

Hope you bring the Brew Crew some good luck. My boss in Milwaukee will be most appreciative. I have not been to Miler park yet. From TV looks like a nice park. Old County stadium was a dive. The bleacher in the Outfield were cool, but that was it. I can understand why they tore that down. I can also understand why the Twins moved. The Metrodome is no place for baseball. You will like Target Field... I did!!

Janice Kiedaisch on

Jen's family are big White Sox fans; the Kiedaisch's have always been Cubs fans. The last two years, however, I have been a guest with Jen's family to sit in a suite and enjoy lots of great food while watching America's favorite past time at Cellular field. This summer Joel and his family and I are going to watch the Cubs and Brewers play in Milwaukee. It will be a first for all of us. Glad the weather has started to get warmer for you.

What a man.....taking the leftover pizza to a friend. You're my hero. Have a safe trip.

Bob Kaplan on

Great to see and get to visit with you Dave! I owe you a pizza next time! What a fantastic surprise it was getting your message. By the way, you still remain my "favorite boss" of all time.

Bob, great top see you and your lovely bride this week. This retirement stuff is a pretty good gig, huh? Take care my friend and if/when you get to town, give us a call.

Maggie Mae, great to hear from you...just havin' some fun in my retirement years...I know you are too! Great to see you at lunch the other day with Kay.

Jan, when you and Joel go to Milwaukee, you will need to tailgate outside the park..seems like everyone does it at Miller Park...beautiful ballpark!

Alex, loved both Miller Park and Target Field...good facility, good people and two wins for the home team! Next week it will be difficult to actually cheer for the St. Louis Cardinals, but I will do so! Have a good holiday weekend.

Dave, again, I have loved reading your blog. You say you got off at 294 and Cicero ave. at your old stomping grounds-what are your old stomping grounds?

Also, you'll be interested to know the school I work at is on 31st Cicero. But basically it's the same 31st st that's in Chicago-in fact I'm exactly 1 mile west of the city limits, so needless to say, I have had Home Run Inn Pizza and enjoy it very much along with the other excellent Chicago eateries. Next time you're in Chicago I would also reccomend Mr. Sub-great italian sandwich (albeit messy!) and their famous garlic fries go great with it! Bring your Crestor!

Thanks Katie. One of the things I did while working for ISU was an Admissions Counselor and I had the South, and Southwest Suburbs of Chicago. So I went to many of the high schools in that area. The Rich schools, Tinley Park, Stagg, Marist, VJ Andrew, Lincoln Way, Cicero, Berwyn, etc. And I had Morton Community College which had a college day program, then we went for pizza and beer at Home Run Inn. I need to try that sub place...messy is good!!! See ya...and thanks again for reading...Dave
