Back to the boat for breakfast, then up to "my spot" on the top deck as we sailed toward Luxor. Then our itinerary changed from most people on the boat. The boat stopped and let us off in Esna, a small town where all the boats have to lock through. They let us off because our tour folks were smart enough to know we couldn't get to Luxor and everything we wanted to if we stayed on the boat, so we forfeited the afternoon on the boat for an afternoon of temple viewing.
You should have seen us get off the boat. They lowered the gang plank and we were off and they were back under weigh in less than 5 minutes. Most of our shipmates were confused...thought maybe we had been banished from the ship, or something. Nice folks on board packed us box lunches, which we ended up sharing with our driver and tour guide on the way to Luxor. A man got off the boat with us and he was going to be with us until our guide came. Of course, he had us wait in the little shop of his "cousin." Forty bucks later, we had souvenirs for everyone and his dog! Not sure how we're going to get them home.
Anyway, our driver showed up and he, along with a tour guide took the 45 minute ride to Luxor, where we met another tour guide who would show us the Temples of Karnak and Luxor...they were the best, biggest and most beautiful temples yet...glad we saved them until the end. Have you added up how much I've had to tip all these guys???? Too much, but it gets the job done. Back to the temples. These two temples are also on all the Egypt brochures...simply faulous...complete with sphinxes, obilisks, and 134 carved columns in one massive room. Fantastic!
Then, we piled into the van and the driver took us back to where our boat was docked...we thought...it was not. Half hour later, we determined it had not docked at all yet and so we waited until we saw it dock and boarded.
Sandy's tired and sick, Laura's getting better the the two sickies are giving me a mild sore throat. Thanks for sharing!!!
We check out of the boat tomorrow, have one more scheduled tour and then fly back to Cairo for our flight home tomorrow night. It truly has been the trip of a lifetime!!!
