Billed as a "swanky playground of the international jet-set" we took our backpacks on the 11:30 ferry from Split to Hvar Town to see whether we would stick out like a sore thumb, as you would expect in a bunch of rich tossers. The boat certainly wasn't a "jet-set" as I'd imagine it, more like a "Saga-set" as aged Brits and Germans struggled with bags and made sure their socks were well pulled up to just below the knee before disembarking at Hvar Town.
We camped at a small, shady place with no grass, so made do with a bed of rocks with an uninterrupted view of the sea. The nearest shop was 4km away, and the toilets are cleaned about once a year, but there was a bar-b-q and a nice German couple, Katarin and Imo. The pace of life was very slow, so we made do with lying on a selection of pebbly beaches with German tourists in various states of undress. We learnt the German word for prude (pruden), as us Brits don't have a long history of turning up a beach, removing all of our clothes and then lying stark bollock naked in front of everyone else. I don't really want, or need to say any more about this matter.
The island of Hvar is OK - yeah, the water is lovely and the sun is hot and shines all day, but, well.... it's just OK. Nowt special. And we had expected much from Croatia, which will be the new Spain soon once the package deals really take off......
