As a certan P. Cooke would say, "pencils down, we have a winner". Ignore what I said about Budapest being Top 5 material.... it doesn't compare to lovely, sleepy Ljubljana. With a compact but beautiful Old Town, cobbled streets lined with bars and a small river running through the middle of it, it is wonderful. And now some of the budget airlines fly here from the UK, so what are you waiting for???? And go before the Euro comes into effect in 2007 - it'll be more expensive then. Oh, LJ (as I'll call it from now on) is a new entry at number 5.
It's not huge, but that only adds to the appeal, and there are only 250,000 or so Ljubljanians or whatever they may call themselves. Rather, it feels like a decent sized provincial town, and has a leisurely pace with long lunches taken at shaded tables with big, cheap glasses of good Slovenian red wine.
The weather gods are with us too, as it has apparently been chucking it down basically all summer, and since we arrived the coulds parted and the sun has shone as it should. Good news when you're camping 5 kms out of town.
