Croatia's capital city is full of big, grand buildings despite many years of fairly recent war. On Sunday it was also full of Dinamo Zagreb football fans ready for the biggest game of the season, a home match vs Hajdzk Split. The riot police were out in large numbers, with the local paper publishing the numbers of police (1,000) to be at the game and the number of horses (300) and dogs (200) to be employed too! A waiter at a nice cafe we went to proudly told us that there would be trouble and we shouldn't go to the game. A big smile came onto his face when he told us about Croatian hooligans wrecking large parts of Valetta during a World Cup qualifying match a few days earlier. He supported Leeds, which shouldn't come as a surprise, should it?

Croatia is also the birthplace of the cravat. We would have liked to tie ourselves down in Zagreb for a few nights, but there was nowhere to stay that we could reasonably afford - the one hostel was booked up for the next 10 days and as it was Sunday, all tourist information and accommodation booking places were closed. Bloody Catholics - giving themselves the day off when we need their help!!!

We had a kind of divine intervention when visiting a huge Cathedral when the priest tried to coerce us into his confession box. Now, I have read lots of articles about what Catholic Priests have done to various people over the years, and have seen Sleepers, so was apprehensive, and also as A HEATHEN UNBELIEVER I thought I may be cast into hell and damnation. Instead he gave us a prayer, which was nice of him. In English, too.....

So then, no option but to take the 1815 train to Ljubljana....
