Ceske Budejovice. When I realised we would be so close to this place, I knew we had to pay a pilgrimmage. I tried to introduce the idea of a visit by explaining that this old town has a large square, one of the largest in Europe and a selection of beautiful historic buildings. And it it encircled by a beautiful river. And I am sure there would be many more things if I had taken more time to do my research.
But the main reason for a vist was simple.
The town is often better known by its German name, Budweis. And it has a famous product that is exported all over the world. In fact, it was so famous that an American company took the name and Trademarked its use in the US before the Czechs knew anything about it. Anybody who has tasted both brands will be able to tell you, without hesitation, which is the more superior.....
Budweiser beer has been produced in the Czech Republic, and whatever other names the country has had previously, for more than 600 years, and the name is synonymous with excellent ale. The tour of the beer factory was a little dull, and you only got a small plastic beaker of the stuff, but it is possibly the best beer I have ever tasted. And it is good for you, or so the tour guide told us. The tour guide was great, as she conducted the whole tour in English, despite their being 4 English-speakers and 15 German speakers. Still, they should have paid more attention at school, shouldn¡´t they!
Oh, the town? Yes, yes..... very nice.
