Mt. Nebo

Mt. Nebo is where Moses is said to be buried. It was from the valley below that he saw the Promised Land just before he died. In the early 4th century a sanctuary was built on Mt. Nebo to honor Moses, probably over the remains of a more ancient construction. During the Byzantine period, the church was transformed into a basilica with a sacristy and baptistery. Mosaics inside the Memorial Church of Moses include an example depicting farmers, hunters, and an assortment of animals surrounded by geometric decoration. An inscription dates it to 531 CE.

The Memorial Church of Moses, a Franciscan church on the top of Mt. Nebo is being renovated so we were not able to see the inside.

According to the Old Testament the Moabite city of Madaba was one of those conquered by the tribes of Israel. After changing hands several times it flourished under Roman dominion and by the 4th century CE it had become an important center of Christianity with its own bishop. In recent years, both John Paul II and Benedict XVI have visited this historic town with all citizens, even the Muslims lining the streets to greet the popes. This mostly Muslim town has several Christian churches.
