As a recent graduate of the University of Utah with a major in Human Development and Family Studies and a minor in Religious Studies, my wonderful husband thought a nice graduation gift for me would be a tour of the Holy Land. I have been studying the Bible for many years and, several years ago, I had an enlightening experience when I discovered Biblical/Jesus historical scholar Marcus Borg. Studying the Bible and Christianity from a historical perspective makes so much more sense to me than from a theological perspective. Doors opened, my mind could wrap itself around the logical academic study of Christianity, and my heart burst with happiness at this newly learned knowledge. Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors -- the motto of the United Methodist Church. It was my church where I met Marcus Borg -- literally and figuratively. He visited our church for a long weekend in 2007 and I devoured several of his books about Christianity, the Bible, and Jesus. Many historical Christian scholars lose some of their spirituality as they study and interpret the ancient documents, but Dr. Borg's wife is an Episcopal priest. My spirituality has been enhanced by the knowledge I have gained by studying several scholars. I am excited to see how a trip to the Holy Land affects me and, especially, how it affects Tom since he attends church only on Christmas Eve. Only God knows . . . .
And so, preparations are beginning. We have the tour scheduled and paid for, we are in the process of getting the appropriate vaccines, and we are thinking about clothes to pack. It will be winter in this neck of the woods and somewhat warmer in that neck of the woods. We will need conservative clothes for the times when we share meals with Muslim and Jewish families, we will need summery clothes for the days when the temperatures reach a wonderful 75*, we will need a jacket for cool days, but a coat for our days in NYC upon returning to the USA. We need to update our wills as our adult children probably do not wish to be sent off to live with their aunt in South Dakota. :-) We need to prepare the house for our house sitters. And, the list continues with all that needs to be done before we leave.
