After a very nice lunch in Queenstown we set off for what we thought would be a nice drive to Makarora via Arrowtown. All went according to plan until the sat nav took us off the main Route 6 highway and onto a mountain road (we didn't realise we had left the highway until it was too late and impossible to turn around). What an experience - Dawn lost all feeling in her hand as she clung to the door whilst Sue held so tight to the steering wheel she got blisters
. The road had the sharpest hairpin bends on the steepest gradients we had ever seen and by the time we got to the top there were only sheer drops either side and we wanted to stop but then we had to do it all over again to come down the other side - we went up so high we were level with the tallest peak, in the snow line and above some of the clouds - very scary when you have only been driving a ford fiesta until a few days ago. Anyone who finds themselves travelling along state highway 6 to Wanaka ensure you go via Cromwell and not over the Crown Range road towards Cardrona unless you really want a challenge! Even the sat nav thought we were going wrong because the bends took us right back on ourselves to the point it kept telling us to do a u turn as we were facing the wrong way.
Finally made it to Makarora and had a very large glass of wine! We didn't even bother to look for a decent campsite we picked the first one we saw which was a carpark at the back of a cafe in the middle of nowhere.
Left Te Anau for Queenstown at 6am much to Dawn's disgust but we had to be there for a 9am Shotover Jet ride. Got there just in time and had a brilliant time in the jet boat roaring down the canyon barely missing the rocks and doing mental 360 degree turns. Our faces were frozen at the end but luckily we had our thermals on! That finished it was off to the Skyline Gondola for the luge. What fun, laughed all the way down and enjoyed it so much we did it again!
