We arrived in Pucon as the sun was setting which was very beautiful and passing through the lovely lakeside town of Villarica we could see the very dominant Volcan Vilarrica completely covered in snow
! I nearly had a heart attack as we got off the bus as this huge siren started blaring out and I had visions of the volcano erupting! Hee Hee! As it turns out it was the fire station calling in all its firemen! It was a great place for disaster watching though...they had Forest Fire & Volcano Activity Indicators everywhere! Oooo goody! The whole place had a very Alpen feel to it and we finally found a cute little hostel with a gas fire and piping hot showers after being shown around a random blokes front bedroom and kindly making excuses that we were meeting friends at another hostel! Oooooo we're such liars! We spent our first day messing around and enjoying the beautiful lake and volcano views...its an extremely pretty town and its got a huge main square surrounded by lots of posh hotels! Guess what..that's not where we were staying! We had more supermarket excitement and headed back for yet another bed picnic ready for our adventure climbing the volcano the next day!
Up bright & early, we headed to the agency and started getting all our gear on including special boots that felt like we were wearing ice skates, crampons & the works and then...booooo....the heavens opened and the whole thing was called off! The stupid thing was, they hadn't climbed the day before and it was a beautiful day so not sure when they do actually climb but this time it wasn't to be for Team Smedders! So we headed back to bed and decided to head onto Valdivia later on that day!!!!!
Gutted as its the only volcano we've come across where you can actually see the lava bubbling away, have snowball fights and everything!!!!! :0(
Hungover and on the road again, we wandered to the bus station after having to stop and take photos of a Viking cafe for the BVS! Two lovely sausage rolls later and we were starting to recover and settled down for our journey to Pucon! It was basically like being back on the M1...just a long, straight motorway with not a lot going on! But to be fair it was very green!! Boooo..bring back the manicness of bus journeys in Asia! We had a very nice man looking after us on the bus...very nice as he kept bringing us snacks and had a John Wayne fetish so we were watching westerns all the way there! Hee Hee! We passed through Los Angeles..oh yes...not quite bikini clad rollerblading babes like in the North American equivalent though more like woolly hats & parkas and Paul badly chose at our lunch stop ordering stomach lining! Yuck! I stuck to a good old safe hot dog!
