Well we soon discovered that its alot easier to go from North to South in Malaysia! But in true Team Smedders style and 5 (oh yes!) buses and a whole day of travel later we arrived in Kota Bahru in the North East of Malaysia (v close to the Thai Border!) This place came as a great surprise as we'd met an Irish couple who didn't rate it that much but not letting this put us off we went exploring and were not disappointed! It's got great buildings from mosques to old palaces, cool museums and lots of history to match! Combine this with a bustling city and all together it's a pretty top notch stop if you're heading to the Perhentian Islands! Think we were craving abit of culture as well as we'd been concentrating on jungles and adventure for a while so it was nice to potter round museums and buildings again! Paul reckons I just like been nosy!
We did our comedy classic again with the roti - you remember me telling you that we ended up with fish food in KL..well this time we asked for a Roti Batak and ended up with a toasted marmalade sandwich!!!
I'd had a mini-crisis the night we arrived as once again we'd resorted to bunk beds, the bathroom was dirty, there were lots of mossies and we needed to do laundry!! My actual comment to Paul was "I just want to feel clean!!!!' - we were at risk of turning into smelly travellers but for one reason or another hadn't stopped off anywhere long enough to get our laundry done and despite the fact that Malaysia is the most modern country we've been to so far, the cheaper accommodation options are the worst in terms of value for money! BOOOO! My lovely husband though patiently went about attaching my mosquito net to my bed using sellotape! Bless! You do get to that stage when you just crave your home comforts abit or even just a clean bathroom and a normal toilet! :0)
