Our power snorkelling instructor told us about a little place called Khao Sok National Park located just south of Surathani back on the mainland and from the pictures he showed us we thought it was definitely worth a look so we decided to by-pass the other islands (Ko Phang Nan and Ko Samui) to go on an adventure in the jungle instead! The adventure started on the overnight boat....woah...don't think either of us have been on a sea as rough! I was willing myself not to need a wee but half way through the night sure enough nature called and it must have been highly amusing watching my progress down the boat ricocheting from pillar to mattress and down the steps to the toilet! This is when you men are really lucky - squat toliet on a rocking and rolling boat to have a wee! Hmmmmm! You work it out! Paul on the other hand sauntered down the middle of the boat in about 2.1 seconds - as I said sometimes it must be good to be be a man!!

This was by far the best thing we've done so far and so much more relaxing than Ko Tao! The bus dropped us off at the side of the road and we met 'Rambo' - oh yes none other - who took us to the Khao Sok Jungle Huts - very cute little huts on stilts! It was soooo cheap and we managed to wangle one with a balcony overlooking the river! Yipppeee! Spent the rest of the afternoon reading in a hammock on the balcony! Reckon we could get used to this! (Really felt like we were in the jungle when I saw a snake on the way back to our room!)

We booked onto a 2 day/1 night tour to go out to a nearby lake/stay on rafthouses and go on a jungle trek which turned out to be unbelievable! We went out onto the lake by longtail boat sailing past towering limestone cliffs - it really was beautiful and finally rounding a corner to see a row of about 12 rafthouses on the edge of the lake with a little restaurant! Excellent! We spent the afternoon relaxing and swimming in the lake - we could dive in straight from the little jetty infront of our rafthouse - the water was sooooo warm and as one girl described it 'soft'!!! Paul practiced and perfected his bellyflops from a nearby tree protruding from the lake! The fish were very pleased! We then decided it would be a great idea to take an inflatable canoe out and go and explore abit - it took us literally about an hour to work out how not to go round in circles and alot of oar smacking! We think we saw monkeys when the trees rustled but that was as good as it got! Don't think we'll make canoe adventurers! In the evening, we sat with our guides (Rambo and Big Man) and an Italian lady who was also staying there and proceeded to get quite merry over several rum and cokes! So merry infact that we both gave a sterling rendition of 'Ob-La-Di' on the karaoke machine! GENIUS! Much later we embarked on a night safari on which we saw diddly-squat (it was a full moon??!!??), Paul got bored with everyone's conversation (i.e. fell asleep) and our guides took great enjoyment putting a toad down Paul's t-shirt! Hee Hee!

The next day we got up bright and early and set out on our jungle trek! This was my first time in the jungle so I was abit pre-occupied with leeches but felt lots better when Rambo assured me that it was the dry season therefore no leeches! Phew! There was a lovely smell which I didn't expect - frangipani flowers! Mmmmmm! (Don't you think a camera with smell would be a great idea!!! Hee Hee! But not for durian fruits!)We had a great few hours spotting animals, birds (an eagle and hornbills), bugs and exploring a huge cave complete with lots of bats (smelly!) and lots of spiders (scary!) - we even had a short bit where we had to swim and for the second time that day nearly lost my sandal! The highlight has got to be when Rambo suddenly appeared from the undergrowth with a huge (I mean palm-sized) green and yellow spider which he promptly let crawl all over his body...and then my MAD husband did it too! It crawled all over his head...UUUUUGGGHH! We've got the video clip to prove it which I will take great pleasure in showing when we get back! Cringeworthy!

So yes...we loved this place...a hidden gem! GO THERE!
