The drive from Luang Prabang itself was spectacular weaving up and down mountains so at times we were above the clouds, heading through hill villages and bends like you've never seen (yes the kids were puking again!)...for some reason I'd expected the road just to be straight (don't ask me why! well it is on the map!) and it was even better to not have any expectations of the journey!
We arrived mid afternoon and checked in to our guesthouse and went for a wander down to the river! Loved it loved it loved it
The next day was EXCELLENT starting with scrambled eggs and bacon! You know a day is off to a good start if you have a good breakfast! Once again I managed to look like a fatty when I asked if we could have a pancake too...my mouth dropped when she brought a pineapple sponge cake! Felt better when the group on the next table - inspired by my sponge - ordered one too!! We ended up having a FAB group (depending on how you look at it!) as I spent the remainder of the day resembling a drowned rat! Me and Paul shared a canoe with me at the front (bad move!) - I was in the firing line in a soon-to-become very competitive 'splashing war' which finally resulted in us capsizing! Very funny in that going down our first rapids (only small!), our expert steering meant we ended up going down backwards and to end the day off going through the bridge backwards as we headed home! We're good!!!!! It was great though towards the end as we passed Beer Lao stations where they would hold out a bamboo stick for you to grab and pull you in so you could buy a beer! Excellent! Good timing as well as this was just after we had capsized!
Went out for dinner in the evening with our new-found friends and had a typical Lao meal with Lao whiskey!!! Eugggghhh! Potent! Neither if us are great fans...Paul doesn't like whiskey at the best of times and this was the grimmest whiskey i've ever tasted! Met a really nice girl and her bloke from Quebec who had already done S America and are now doing a similar route to us through Asia but on a motorbike! Great listening to their stories! They're planning on working in an orphanage in Cambodia for 3 months so we might pop in and see them...got a feeling it might break my heart though! Will keep you posted!
So yes, we loved Vang Vieng....next stop Vientiane!
