Well we finally did it we got on the plane, backpacks and all abit tipsy (dutch courage!)and very excited once we had said our teary goodbyes!! So what have we been up to..well the adventure really began as soon as we got off the plane - we both got our bags, stood there and said 'what now?' Think we'd been so used to having transfers booked, etc (or I had anyway) that we hadn't really looked into how to get into Bangkok! Think I amused the lady on the information desk quite massively when I asked if we could get a boat (or booooaaaat as Paul would say!) into town! Shows that research comes in handy when you're travelling..hee hee! Anyway we decided to try the train so found the station and had our first experience of the thai people - unbelievably friendly and smiley!!!! That first evening we successfully managed to look like fat westerners when we placed our order (excuse being we'd only had breakfast!), we basically had about 6 plates piled with food infront of us plus 2 large beers! What was that about losing weight while we're away...hmm...maybe not, the food is absolutely yummy and dirt cheap! Oh dear! Maybe we won't be uploading the photos! :0)
Anyway onto Bangkok, what a FAB city! We decided to do some major walking and explored chinatown and alot of the backstreets, had a lovely lunch in a street cafe where we asked the owner to teach us abit of Thai - obviously we're now fluent! (although Andy and Harriet will be impressed as I can still remember how to count to 10) In the evening we met Jo and Patrick and took a tuk tuk to Pat Pong (oh yes Lyndsey Jones)! We watched the rugby - boohoo - then went to see the alternative Bangkok nightlife!!! Its amazing what you can do with a ping pong ball and darts these days!!!!!!! We definitely saw an alternative way to smoke a cigarette as well!
The temples (or wats) in Bangkok are absolutely stunning! Hopefully the photos will do them justice (we'll be uploading soon hopefully!) There's even the 'Temple of Dawn' - Paul loved the write up in the Lonely Planet 'It looks more impressive from the river than it does close up!!!!' He seemed to think that referred to me as well...
Onto Kanchanaburi.....
